Former telecom minister A Raja and M Kanimozhi of the DMK were among 17 people acquitted today in the "2G scam", one of India's biggest corruption scandals.
Mr Raja, other politicians
and corporate executives were accused in the alleged below-market-price sale of lucrative telecoms permits bundled with airwaves in 2008, which the national auditor said may have cost the government as much as Rs. 1.76 lakh crore revenue loss. Though the Supreme Court had
licences allocated by
Mr Raja declaring them illegal, a special CBI court today
said "a huge scam was seen by everyone where there was none." The CBI will challenge the order. The 2G scam became the
centrepiece of allegations of deep-seated corruption in the government of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
